Oh Yeah! Nutrition just released a new protein bar that is apparently only available in the UK & the rest of Europe: the Low Carb Bar.
It comes in 2 flavors:
- Peanut Butter Pie
- Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough
And we got ourselves a box of the Peanut Butter Pie and put it through the test for you.
We got curious, since Oh Yeah! already has a low carb bar in their selection, the Victory Bar. This bar competes quite well with the popular Quest bars, so what makes the difference?
Ingredients & macros
Since we're trying the peanut butter pie, we're going to have a look at that label.
The label says 1 gram of sugar, but this is simply achieved by using maltitol as a sweetener. Maltitol is a sugar alcohol and is technically not a sugar. It has a lower GI than sugar (see graph below) However, it is known to raise blood sugar levels in some people.
It contains 10 grams of fiber, coming from Isomalto-Oligosaccarides, a prebiotic fiber also mentioned in a previous article. The protein comes from a blend of whey isolate & milk protein isolate, and the bar is gluten-free.
Taste
First of all, the bar looks more like a candy bar with a coating on the outside. It has a soft-chewy consistency and is quite sweet, but not too overpowering. You can clearly taste peanuts, they hit the mark on that one for sure!
So what makes this so different from the Victory Bar? Most of all, the consistency. The Victory bar is more sticky, fudge like, and the Low Carb Bar is more of a solid bar.
The other difference are the sweeteners, there is no maltitol in a Victory bar and the fiber content is a lot higher. However, a Victory bar does contain regular sugar.
Other than that, they are quite similar in macros and calories (200-220 cal)
If you don't mind the sugar alcohols, this bar can be a nice addition to your snack collection.
Where to buy?
We got them at the Body & Fitshop (NL)
For the UK / EU: Cardiff Sports Nutrition
